New Survey Data Reveals Hourly Workforce Needs Choice Following COVID-19 Pandemic

Greene-Group, parent company of MyWorkChoice, finds 75% want flexible scheduling in jobs

[Cornelius, NC] MyWorkChoice, the app-enabled workforce solution that makes flexibility work for companies and W-2 employees, today announced new data from a workforce sentiment survey conducted by parent company Greene-Group, giving insight into the current status of the American workforce. The survey focused on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on hourly employees and their work status.

Key Survey Findings Include:

  • 75% of hourly workers want flexibility in their job, and 70% want the ability to use a mobile app to schedule a shift
  • The ability for workers to choose when and how much they work surpassed preference for the type of work by 20-basis points
  • 30% of hourly workers cannot currently return to scheduled hourly shifts because of new family responsibilities resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic

While a growing sentiment pre-COVID-19, companies realize now more than ever that they can utilize flexibility to best attract, recruit, and retain today’s hourly workforce. Survey findings bear this out, revealing the ability for employees to choose when and how much to work through an app-based technology appealed to nearly 70% of respondents. As a result of additional responsibilities and conflicts, almost 1 out of 5 workers reported that 10-12 hour shifts would be extremely or very unattractive in the post-COVID workforce environment. Additionally, this ability for employees to choose when and how much they work surpassed their preference for a specific type of job by 20 basis points.

Other Notable Survey Findings

  • Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 60% of hourly workers were working more than 36-hours each week with 30% working 2 or more jobs
  • 56% of those hourly workers were also looking for new employment opportunities – and most valued flexibility in potential new employment opportunities

The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly impacted unemployment rates, reaching 14.7% in April 2020. For the hourly workforce employed in essential business operations, including warehouses, manufacturing facilities and food distributors, survey data shows 42% of hourly workforce respondents had their hours and pay either reduced by more than 50% or eliminated completely as a direct result of the pandemic. While press coverage suggests large numbers of Americans are receiving government assistance, only 14% of the hourly workforce surveyed reported receiving unemployment assistance, and another 13% said they applied but had not received any payment.

The ability for companies to manage workforce operations and build in scalability amidst an uncertain economic period can be aided by flexibility.

“We’ve seen this for over three decades,” says MyWorkChoice CEO Tana Greene. “Employees want flexibility now more than ever, and employers benefit when they capitalize on that need. Our fill rates of over 95% per shift, per day, show how impactful the ability to choose hours worked can be. Through a mobile application, MyWorkChoice virtually recruits, screens, trains and schedules a workforce community to meet the evolving needs of our clients. Workers have the ability to view and instantly select shifts in four, six or eight-hour increments to build a schedule that fits their needs – up to 40 hours per week – while creating a culture of performance that delivers accountability of workers to employers.”

Thousands of flexible job opportunities through MyWorkChoice are now available in cities across Arizona, California, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas, with new locations added rapidly.
